This technology has apparently been around for a few years, but seems timely to us because 1) some of us have been spending too much time in the sun this summer and 2) just heard about its new use.

ADOLESCENCE is an awkward time to grow a mustache. Especially if you’re a girl.

When Vidya Srinivasan was 7, girls would make her play a man in games of make-believe because of the downy hairs on her upper lip. “It really started messing up my self-esteem,” said Vidya, now 13. “I got to thinking that maybe there’d been a mistake and I was really born a boy.”

Her mother, Dr. Hema Sundaram, a dermatologist in suburban Washington, tried to reassure her. The amount of hair a girl sprouts (and where) varies widely based on genetics, hormones and ethnicity, Dr. Sundaram said, and a bit of facial hair is not uncommon among women who, like the doctor and her daughter, are of Indian descent.

“But she started crying, and I felt like crying with her,” Dr. Sundaram said. “I tried to impart that if someone is saying something bad about you, it’s usually because they feel bad about themselves. But it’s very tough to deal with that when you’re 7.”

Together they decided to get rid of the unwanted lip hair. Bleach proved ineffective, depilatory creams irritated Vidya’s skin, and Dr. Sundaram ruled out waxing because of the inflamed follicles she had seen in her practice. Since last year, Dr. Sundaram has brought her daughter into her office several times to use a laser to put the hairs — and Heathers — at bay.

Her tormentors were silenced and, Vidya said, “I felt like I’d won.”

Parents of teenagers have long walked a fine line between helping a child grease the wheels of social acceptance, and stressing physical appearance too much. Do you let a tween shave her legs or armpits because other fifth graders do? Will a nose job be a lifesaver or a mistake to later regret?

In the realm of cosmetic decisions, there are few clear-cut answers regarding what is good and bad, comely or ugly.

Some cultural absolutes do exist. In the 20th century, for instance, Americans seemed to decide that crooked, imperfect teeth should be fixed as early as possible, even though most of us chew fine with imperfect choppers.

And now removing hair, like getting braces, is making the transition from vanity to necessity for increasingly more parents and their girls and boys. “I have a teenage client who is on the swim team and is getting hair removed from his back,” said Rena Abdinova, a registered nurse and an owner of the City Skin and Laser Clinic in San Francisco. “He has a 24-year-old brother who was also on the swim team in high school and had hair on his back, but then it wasn’t an issue. People are becoming much more self-conscious about hair.”

Teenagers often require more laser treatments than adults because their hormonal fluctuations can change the rate and pattern of hair growth. Still, hair removal by laser is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure among minors, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, an organization of board-certified plastic surgeons.

In 2007, teenagers got 67,523 procedures — more than double the number that age group had in 2000, according to the society, which surveyed its members and board-certified dermatologists but not aestheticians or other doctors.

Many children seek to be denuded because excess fuzz embarrasses them. Others want to avoid a lifetime of battling hair. For Christine Furman, of Greenwich, Conn., getting laser treatment for the unibrow of her 16-year-old daughter Teresa was a celebratory event, not unlike ear piercing. Classmates had also nicknamed Teresa “Uno Brow.”

Ms. Furman was wary of electrolysis because it had left pockmarks on her chin. But she wanted to give her daughter the gift of never having to maintain her eyebrows again. “She got the first treatment the day after she got off her braces,” she said. “It hurt a little bit, so she squeezed my hand. Then we went to Bloomingdale’s.”

Laser hair removal devices, which were first cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in 1995, work by beaming light at various frequencies through the skin in order to heat up and damage the hair follicle. It can take minutes or hours, depending on the size of the area, and usually requires several sessions.

Until the advent of laser hair reduction, the only long-term hair removal option was electrolysis, which can be pricey, time-consuming and painful. The average upper lip needs 6 treatments (5 minutes each) to be lasered compared with roughly 20 sessions of electrolysis (15 minutes each).

Celina Ramsaywack, an electrologist and laser practitioner in Queens, charges $60 an hour for electrolysis and $25 to $95 an hour for laser hair removal. “Laser can be more expensive in the beginning,” she said, “but it takes less time, so in the long run, it’s cheaper.”

In recent years, laser hair reduction centers have sprung up faster than stubble. As many as 2,500 medical spas perform the procedure nationwide, a fivefold increase since 2004, estimated the International Medical Spa Association, a trade organization.

But there are no federal laws governing the use of lasers. In some states, laser hair removal can be performed only by a doctor, while in others, it can be done under one’s supervision, or by a nurse or physician’s assistant. A few states, such as New York, require no licensing.

“My suggestion is that all these procedures be performed by physicians, or a trained experienced technician” said Dr. Roy Geronemus, the director of the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York in Manhattan.

It’s worth nothing that laser hair removal isn’t permanent in case of anyone who is still growing. Children “need to have realistic expectations and understand that once they go through puberty, they will develop more hair,” said Dr. Ellen Marmur, the chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.

The chances of complications are small when laser hair removal is correctly performed, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. But doctors do see patients who, after being treated with a laser by inexperienced doctors or technicians have burns, scarring, increased hair growth in adjacent areas and permanent skin discoloration. Often, these problems are a result of laser misuse.

Laser hair removal, some say, should be a last resort. “I suggest kids first try bleaching, waxing or shaving or plucking,” said Andrea James, who for six years has run a site about hair removal. Most people in the forum reported positive results; more than six who posted said they had experienced second- and third-degree burns.

For some critics, the quest for permanent hair removal at an early age is part of a broader problem. “There’s not supposed to be any signs of entering adulthood,” said Jean Kilbourne, an author of the forthcoming book “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids.” “Adult women in the world of porn have always been rendered hairless. It’s part of the whole kind of infantilizing of women and the contempt for adult women’s bodies.”

Not to mention, some children grow into the bushy brows they perhaps once didn’t like (see Frida Kahlo). “Everybody has to learn to live with the body they got,” said Michael Thompson, a child psychologist and an author of “Mom, They’re Teasing Me.” Then again, he added: “If back hair is making you hate yourself and it’s not a lot of bother to get it removed, O.K. But where do you draw the line? Really, does any 13-year-old look in the mirror and think ‘God, I look smashing’?”

Yet in another waiting area, there’s an elegant swinging bench I’ve seen swinging benches before but never one that looked like this one its whole structure and design is so unique. Frankly speaking, I was stunned and not knowing why I was there for a second because I was totally impressed by the uniqueness and the originality of the design. I instantly removed the doubts in my mind. Not only because of how great the place was decorated but also by how clean everything looked.

After I took a look around and stopped admiring everything what came next was the consultation. I give them a perfect ten. They are so enthusiastic and professional they were willing to answer any and all of my questions completely. Any doubts I had were put to rest. Hair removal's a bitch. Plain and simple. Shaving = razor cuts (ouch), ingrown hairs (ew) and razor burn (double ew + ouch). Depilatories = stank + as if you all didn't know - they don't work. Waxing = pain + waiting for it all to grow back in before ripping the suckers right back out, not to mention the occasional rash. As if this all doesn't sound bad enough already, we have to do it over. and over. and over. again.

Whether you're like me and shaving your underarms in the morning means stubble by night, or you're one of those lucky few who can stave off days at a time, the truth is conventional hair removal = no end in sight.
Enter: laser hair removal. Having wanting to try this for awhile, I was as happy as a an alcoholic at an open bar when offered the opportunity from Satori Laser. No more painful waxing? So off I went (in a snowstorm no less) to get my underarm and bikini hair zapped. Located at 34th street in the office side of the Hotel New Yorker, it’s not the sexiest location, but don’t let that fool you. After wandering around the labyrinth of hallways on the 8th floor (what can I say, I get confused in corporate buildings), I emerged into Satori greeted by peaceful music, a serene ambiance and the lovely receptionist Genevieve (amaze hair, btw). After filling out some quick paperwork I met my laser technician Mimi (who also owns the spa) whom I followed back to a spacious, impeccable treatment room. Being a ridiculously crazy OCD germaphobe (just ask my roommates), when I say impeccable, I mean impeccable.
Mimi was very thorough with exactly how the treatment would work and how many times I would need to come in – 1 treatment a month for 7-8 months. Luckily since I have fair skin and dark hair (well, naturally anyways), I’m a perfect candidate. The laser works by detecting pigment differentiation in the skin, so the treatment works best on people with fair skin and dark hair – and vice versa. The darker your skin is and the darker your hair is, or the fairer your skin and the lighter your hair is, well, you’re shit out of luck. You can still opt for treatment, however you will have to go in more times than an “ideal” candidate, and the results will be less effective. Basically, learn to love your razor.
Anyways, back to me. I peeled my shirt off, dropped trou, and assumed the position – flat on yer back – on the table. (Don’t worry, underthings stay on.)
Having received a one-time underarm treatment a year ago at a laser spa (whose name shall remain nameless…mostly because, I can’t remember the name), that quite frankly hurt like a BITCH, I was understandably a little anxious. Thank god for that leftover Vicodin from the nose job.

Now don’t get me wrong. Laser still isn’t all roses and cupcakes. Some parts of the body hurt more than others, and you just have to deal with it. Thankfully, Mimi’s my kind of girl – she doesn’t bullshit. When she would get to a sensitive spot on the underarm or bikini, she would warn me. “Now this one’s going to hurt.” Great. Many people say laser feels like a rubber band snapping against your skin. I say more like a hot needle jabbing into you, but it’s all semantics. Pain-wise it’s certainly not any more painful than a wax. And at least you have the peace of mind knowing you’re not going to have to repeat this every 4-6 weeks for the rest of your life. During the painful ones, you just grin and bear it (read: grimace and sink your nails into the side of the table), and tell yourself “It’s permanent, it’s permanent, it’s permanent.” Well, permanent after 7 more sessions anyways.
The good news is, each subsequent session hurts less and less – because there’s less and less hair to zap. Something to look forward to.
Underarms weren’t so bad. There were a few sensitive spots, and the burning smell was kind of gross (the laser is, after all, severing off the root of your hair via burning it), but again, the thought of never having to shave again? I’ll deal.
Bikini definitely hurt (a lot) more. The outer bikini area was fine. The closer the laser got to Brazil itself, the more painful it got. Yowsa is an understatement.
While in the thick of it I thought to myself “I can’t believe women torture themselves like this all to look like hairless Chihuahuas,” as soon as I got home I couldn’t wait to go back from my next treatment. The thought of never having to shave again is just too enticing to not deal with 30 minutes of rubber band snapping.
Interesting fact from Mimi: If the laser isn’t hurting at all, either you’re doped up on horse tranquilizers or the technician doesn’t have it on a high enough setting. Why would they do this? To get you in for more treatments of course – and to get more of your $$. While laser shouldn’t be unbearable, a sign of slight pain is a sign it’s working.
I was a little red immediately post-treatment, which subsided by the next day. Mimi told me it would be about 7-10 days before I would start seeing results, as you have to wait for your hair to grow back in before it will literally fall right out. So why all the treatments? The laser can only zap so much at one time. You have to go in for multiple treatments to make sure the laser has gotten each and every last, persistent, heinous, mother f&@#%*@ hair follicle.
Within a week I noticed results on my underarms, two weeks for bikini. I literally have not shaved my pits in over a week and there is not a hair to be found. Bikini has some strays, but they better enjoy their presence now. Next week I go in for my 2nd treatment where they are about to be zapped from existence. Can’t wait!!

Proper skin care after and between treatments is vital for achieving your desired results and maintaining healthy, beautiful skin. Following a few simple words of advice will help you obtain the results you want out of your laser hair removal treatments, while drastically reducing the chances of complications or discomfort following treatments.

Immediately after a laser hair removal treatment, you can expect the skin in the treated area to be slightly red and swollen. The area may feel a little puffy and irritated, like a mild sunburn. This is most noticeable around hair follicles. For many patients, this sensation disappears within a few hours. For some, however, it may take a day or two for skin to return to a completely normal state. Recovery time is not necessary for laser hair removal, and most patients will be able to return to normal activities, such as working or shopping, directly after treatments. If you feel you might want to relax for a few hours after treatments, by all means schedule your treatments for a time when this is possible, but most patients will find this to be unnecessary. If you notice any type of blistering or crusting in the treated area, you should make sure this is cared for by the laser treatment facility immediately, and you should discuss whether further treatments are still recommended.

If you find the redness and swelling following laser treatments to be uncomfortable, there are ways to alleviate these symptoms. Cold compresses can be used to soothe the area. You can use ice, or it might be easier to soak a soft cloth in ice water and then gently place it over the affected area, changing as often as necessary. Just remember that any affects you feel after laser hair removal treatments should fade in a very short time, so any discomfort you may have won’t last long.

Moisturizing creams can also aid in the recovery of the skin in the treated areas. Usually, your practitioner can recommend or even prescribe you a cream for this purpose. Antibacterial creams are not necessary in most cases, and they may cause further drying of the skin if used on the treated area. Between laser treatments, it is best to maintain the health of your skin in general. By using a daily moisturizer, especially on the areas that will undergo laser treatments, you will ensure that your skin will be healthy and supple during your next treatments. This will help you obtain optimum results from your laser treatments.

For the first few days after laser treatments, it is best to avoid shaving the treated area. After about four days or so, shaving can be resumed. To cleanse the treated area in the days after treatment, simply use a gentle cleanser on the area. Avoid strong soaps that may cause drying of the skin. The shedding of hair in the treated area is a normal part of the treatment and recovery process.

After laser hair removal treatment, it is absolutely crucial that you avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight. Even a small amount of sun exposure can cause irritation and burning on the treated areas of skin. In addition to this, any darkening of the skin due to sun exposure can impact the effectiveness of any follow-up treatments you will have. Darker skin is more likely to burn during laser hair removal treatments. If you know your skin will be exposed to sunlight, be sure to put a generous amount of sun screen on the area. Sun screen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended.

Your practitioner may recommend that you come back in a week or so after treatment so they have a chance to see how your skin and hair react to the treatments. At this time, you can discuss with them any further questions you may have about recovery and care. Then you and your practitioner can decide how and when further treatments will be conducted.
